Our Heritage

Davison was named for one of Michigan's great pioneers, Norman Davison. He and his four sons built a sawmill in Atlas Township on Kearsley Creek in June of 1831. Norman Davison was a delegate who helped frame the first constitution of Michigan in 1835 and held various public offices throughout his lifetime.

The area has evolved from a small settlement to a thriving community, maintaining its historic charm while embracing progress. Today, downtown Davison continues to serve as the heart of the community, just as it has for nearly two centuries.

1831
Norman Davison Arrives
Norman Davison and his four sons built a sawmill on Kearsley Creek in June 1831. Norman would become one of Michigan's great pioneers and delegates to frame the first Michigan constitution in 1835.
1835
First Land Purchase
James Hoise of Essex County, New York recorded the first land purchase in the area.
1836
First Settlers
Andrew, Alson and Debby Seelye purchased 240 acres, becoming the area's first settlers. They established a general store and ashery on Ridge Road, known as Seelyeville from 1838 to 1865.
1838
Potter Lake Settlement
Ira Potter and family settled on the East Bank of Potter Lake. Ira Thomas Potter was recorded as the first white male child born in the township.
1840
First Township Election
The first election for township officers was held at Goodeough Townsend's home on April 6, 1840. Townsend was named the first supervisor.
1858
First Church Organized
The Baptist Church was organized, later erecting the first part of the present building in 1902.
1871
Railroad Arrives
The Flint to Lapeer railroad was built through the area. The community became known as Davison Station, one mile north of Davison Center.
1872
Village Platted
E.W. Rising laid out the village, which would later be incorporated in 1889. Rising served as the first village president.
1889
Village Incorporation
The Village of Davison was officially incorporated. Dr. L.W. Hanson was the first physician, and Damon Stewart was the first postmaster and merchant.
1894
Bank & Fire
Davison State Bank was organized after the big downtown fire. John F. Cartwright was the first cashier and A.B. Cullen was president.
1895
Davison Hall Built
The three-story brick Davison Hall replaced Rising Hall (destroyed in the 1894 fire). Total cost was $7,555, with contributions from the Township, Masonic Lodge, and Village.
1904
Horse Racing Begins
Horse racing started on Main Street, with county fairs held in what is now the Rosemore Park subdivision until fire destroyed the stables.
1951
Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce was organized with 146 charter members. One of their early projects was the "Welcome to Davison" signs at city entrances.
1956-1958
Main Street Modernization
Modernization of Main Street storefronts and construction of store-to-curb canopies was completed, transforming the downtown business district.
1964
Diamond Jubilee
The city celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (75th anniversary). The concept of "Davison - City of Flags" was also conceived this year.
1975
"City of Flags" Official
The motto "Davison - City of Flags" was officially adopted by the City Council on April 14, 1975, recognizing the Jaycees' flag promotion efforts.
1989
Historical Society
The Davison Historical Society was established to preserve and share the rich history of the Davison area.
City of Flags

In 1961, the Davison Jaycees began selling flags to merchants as a fundraising project. By 1964, the concept of "Davison - City of Flags" was born. After successful flag campaigns and community support, the City Council officially adopted the motto on April 14, 1975.

"The Davison City Council would encourage the Jaycees and the members of the Community to renew their interest in promoting Davison as a good community to live in, and one that honors the Flag of its Nation."
